Music performance anxiety: Conceptual introduction and Peruvian cases

Abstract

Music performance anxiety (MPA) is a complex phenomenon with potentially serious consequences for musicians. In this article I summarize recent literature on this dynamic field of study. Specifically, I will unpack the following topics: definition, consequences, prevalence and treatments, and limitations. Having explained these topics, I reserve the last section to summarize the study of MPA in Peru. This article aims to stimulate an open and scientific discussion of MPA which can inform pedagogical and professional practices for the benefit of the musicians’ well-being. Additionally, the article contributes to the available literature in Spanish, given that the majority of studies on MPA are reported in English-language forums.

Author Biography

  • Álvaro Mario Chang-Arana, Aalto University 

    He is a PhD candidate in Science from Aalto University, Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering. He has a master's degree in Music, Mind and Technology from the University of Jyväskylä and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Lima. Additionally, he received musical training at the National Conservatory of Music of Peru and the Sibelius Academy of Finland.
    His line of research covers topics of anxiety in musical performance, the impact of music on cognitive abilities and the cognitive mechanisms underlying transposition, and empathy in Design Thinking. He is a university professor in psychology and neuroscience, and has offered conferences in Peru, Europe and the United States.
