Abstract

This article explores the application of musical semiotics to the work of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, framing his music as a system of signs imbued with cultural, affective, and symbolic meanings. Building on the theoretical frameworks of Leonard Ratner, focused on musical topics and the rhetoric of Classicism; Kofi Agawu, who integrates structural semiotics, hermeneutics, and discourse analysis; and Raymond Monelle, whose work addresses the cultural, historical, and narrative dimensions of musical signs, the study demonstrates how symbolic elements shape core aspects of the composer’s style, including motivic and melodic design, harmonic discourse, and formal structure. This perspective positions Tchaikovsky’s music as a form of aesthetic and symbolic communication in dialogue with the imaginaries of Russian and European Romanticism, offering new readings of its expressive and cultural signification.
