In Peruvian rock historiography, the new wave music is assumed as a musical movement corresponding to a particular style, significantly opposed to the concept of rock music. This article demonstrates that, in Peru, in the sixties age of the twentieth century, that was called the new wave music did not expressly mean a musical style, but rather a genre and a music practice scene integrated by musicians, musical bands, audience, record labels and the press media, in which several musical subgenres coexisted, such as rock, twist, surf music, melodic pop song and ballad. The assumption of new wave music like an opposed musical style to the rock music, corresponds to a historiographical construction that is based on an idealized authenticity of rock.
