Abstract

Peruvian Creole music, with its roots in the combination of African, European and indigenous traditions, has been an essential manifestation of Peruvian identity. This article focuses on the evolution and current situation of Creole music in Lima, taking as its central theme an unpublished interview with José A. Lloréns, a prominent figure mentioned in Mario Vargas Llosa's recent novel Le dedico mi silencio, which was conducted in the framework of the commemoration of the forty years of the publication of his influential book Música popular en Lima: criollos y andinos (1983), which explored the musical and sociocultural dynamics between Creole and Andean identities in Peru.
