Abstract

This paper proposes a series of general and specific reflections on music composition with algorithms and the formalizable processes applied to sound creation.

Author Biography

  • Jorge Variego, University of Tennessee

    He is a Fulbright Scholar and currently teaches Theory and Composition at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He also directs the composition program at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. He is a member of the National Council of the Society of Composers. His music can be heard in Parma Libraries, Albany Records, CMMAS, Centaury Naxos. In 2017 he was named Mentor of the Year in the College of Fine Arts and Sciences, Division of Performing Arts at the University of Tennessee. In 2018 he published his book on algorithmic composition from the National University of Quilmes, in Argentina. During that same year he received support from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee to be a composer-in-residence at the Visby Center for Composers and was a visiting professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid. Among his recent research works is his book Composing with Constraints published by Oxford University Press in 2021.
