Musicians in motion: understanding body movement in the musical performance of clarinetists

Abstract

The study of body movement in musical performance has gained relevance in recent decades, especially in the search for a greater understanding of musical expressivity. This research aims to describe and classify the body movements employed by clarinetists during the performance of Francis Poulenc's Clarinet and piano Sonata, a complex work in terms of dynamic and tempo changes. Under a qualitative approach, a multiple case study was conducted with four clarinetists who had performed this sonata. Thirteen representative excerpts were selected from the three movements, which showed significant variations in tempo and dynamics. The results revealed six major and one minor body movements, the intensity and frequency of which varied among performers. These findings contribute to the understanding of how musicians use the body to convey musical expressivity, providing a contribution to current theories on the relationship between body and performance in classical music.

    Músico, clarinetista. Inició sus estudios musicales en 2013 durante su etapa escolar. En 2016, estudió bajo la guía de Sady Bernardo. En 2018 ingresó a la Universidad Nacional de Música donde estudió con Claudio Panta. Ha participado en diversos elencos de la UNM y en el programa Orquestando, así como en la Orquesta Sinfónica José Bernardo Alcedo (OSBA), dirigida por Wilfredo Tarazona. Actualmente es docente particular de clarinete, estudiante de la UNM bajo la tutela de Luis Melgar y miembro activo de la Orquesta Sinfónica del Británico.

    Doctor en Administración y Magíster en Ciencias Empresariales por la Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola. Egresado de la Universidad Nacional de Música (UNM). Investigador reconocido por el Registro Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología y de Innovación Tecnológica (RENACYT). Director del Instituto de Investigación de la UNM y cofundador de la Escuela de Música Vivace. Productor del Festival Internacional de Guitarra Vivace y del Concurso Internacional Ciudad de Lima. Ha ofrecido conciertos, cursos y ponencias en América Latina y Europa y ha publicado diversos trabajos de investigación. Es director de tesis y enseña metodología de la investigación en diversas universidades.
