The First National Congress of Amazonian Music was organized by the author of this text, César Bocanegra (director of the ESFAP “Lorenzo Luján Darjón”), and Martín Reátegui (head of the “Iquitos Popular Carnival Steering Committee”), whose work led to the recognition of the Amazonian Carnival as a National Cultural Heritage in 2023.
The call for participation focused on the music that accompanies Amazonian carnivals, but also included topics from historiography, social sciences, and other disciplines. Furthermore, this event was designed to bring together both academic musicians and popular and traditional music practitioners.
