Abstract

Over 80 years ago, one of the best known and beloved tunes of the Peruvian national songbook was unintentionally transformed early on due to a confusion that ended up being canonized through time and tradition. The recent discovery of the song’s sheet music published back when Felipe Pinglo was still alive as well as a major statement about the song’s music made by an acknowledged popular music composer and an original manuscript prompts the following article that studies the three versions in an attempt to recover El Plebeyo’s first melody.

Author Biography

  • Rodrigo Sarmiento Herencia, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos

    Graduate in Art from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. His thesis, Felipe Pinglo and the Creole Song: Stylistic Study of the Musical Work of the Immortal Bardo, won the Research Prize awarded by the Vice-Rector for Research and Postgraduate Studies and was published by the Editorial Fund of the same university. He is currently a student of the Master's Degree in Peruvian and Latin American Literature and his academic work focuses on popular song in 20th century America.
