Abstract

In 2016, the Faculty of Fine Arts of the National University of La Plata published a book dedicated to Latin American popular music. It includes a lecture on music in Chile and Brazil during the 1950s and 1960s given by musicologist Tania Da Costa García. In the prologue, María Elena Larregle, Secretary of Publications at the University, states: "The main interest of this contribution lies not only in the detailed analysis of the strictly musical characteristics that shape the identifying features of the works produced at that time and their antecedents, but, fundamentally, in the establishment of profound links between the mutations in musical language, the areas of circulation and consumption of music, and the political and social contexts of these countries during a historical period marked by the cultural, political, and economic metamorphosis that occurred in Latin America at that time."
