In March 1976 (fifty years ago), the then National Institute of Culture of Peru supported the project initiated five years earlier by the National Library of Peru to publicize what is considered the oldest opera in our continent: La púrpura de la rosa, by Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, choirmaster of the Lima Cathedral, with a libretto by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. The manuscripts of this work had been found in the Reserved Collection of the National Library of Peru in 1944, after the fire that devastated the institution a year earlier.
